Interpreting & Treating Anxiety Disorders With Sex Addiction
Anxiety Disorders and Sex Addiction
Whether it is general or specific to certain situations,
anxiety is a major component of sex addiction and other
the disorders dealt with in this paper. Anxiety and the
things that people do to keep it at manageable levels
have been looked at from several
theoretical perspectives as applied to Sex Addiction.
The Psychodynamic Perspectives
Psychodynamic theorists and many other clinicians believe
that the major determinants of anxiety disorders
are traumatic events left in the unconscious.
They believe anxiety is an alarm reaction that appears
when ever the person is threatened. How an individual
adapts to the anxiety alarm depends on its intensity,
the cue that evokes it, and the person's
characteristic response to alarms. It is normal to experience
some overt anxiety; the amount of anxiety and the
nature of the threat determine whether an instance of
anxiety is normal or pathological as applied to Sex Addiction.
A distinguishing characteristic of clinical anxiety is
that an alarm is frequently sounded in the absence of a
consciously recognized source of danger. A danger exists'
but its basis is vague or totally hidden from view.
A tourist may understandably experience overwhelming
anxiety while walking through a jungle. However, some
individuals experience the same kind of anxiety in their
own living rooms, for no apparent reason. According to
the psychodynamic view, their defenses are inadequate
to control or contain their anxiety indicates that it is
possible to develop a defensive posture that effectively
masks inner turmoil.
Psychodynamic theorists frequently mention the
following as causes of anxiety as applied to Sex Addiction
that reaches clinical proportions: perception of oneself as
helpless in coping with environmental pressures, separation
or anticipation of abandonment, privation and loss of emotional
supports as a result of sudden environmental changes,
unacceptable or dangerous impulses that are close to
breaking into consciousness, and threats or anticipation
of disapproval and withdrawal of love.
