SCHIZOTYPAL PERSONALITY DISORDER & Sex Addiction Issues
SCHIZOTYPAL PERSONALITY DISORDER
The schizotypal personality disorder is described mainly by long-standing
oddities in thinking, perceiving, communicating, and behaving-oddities
that are severe enough to be noticed, but not serious enough to warrant the
more serious diagnosis of schizophrenia. Odd thinking can be manifest in
extreme superstitiousness, or in the sense that one is especially noticed by
others. The latter sense, which is technically called an idea of reference, can
also be a fertile breeding ground for suspiciousness and paranoia.
Depersonalization- a sense of estrangement from oneself and from one's environment- may be present.
Communication may be odd, but not downright
peculiar. It may be tangential, digressive, vague, or overly elaborate, but it is
not loose or incoherent. Finally, people suffering from this disorder may
also experience constricted or inappropriate feelings, with the result that
they are unable to maintain rapport in face-to-face interactions.
The schizotypal personality disorder seems genetically related to schizophrenia
(Kety). Indeed, many of the disturbances described here are
similar to those seen among chronic schizophrenics, but here the disturbances
appear in milder forms. It is an error, however, to identify this disorder
wholly with the schizophrenias because differences of degree are very
important differences as far as psychological distress is concerned. Much as
we do not confuse the poor and the rich, even though both have some
money, so must the schizotypal personality disorder be distinguished from
its more intense relatives, the schizophrenias.
At twenty-one, Mark complains that he feels "spaced out" and "creepy" much
of the time. Unemployed, he lives with his parents and spends much of his time
watching television or staring into space. He says that he often feels as if he is outside himself,
watching himself through a TV screen, Or running through a script
that someone else has written. Mark has had several jobs, but none has lasted
more than a month. He was fired from his last position as a toy salesman after
several customers had complained that he had talked to them in vague terms about
irrelevant things.
Mark is convinced that people do not like him, but he does not understand
why. He is certain that people change their seats on buses to avoid sitting next to
him. He is unhappy about his loneliness and isolation, but he has made no attempt
to re-establish old relationships.
Several months ago, Mark learned that one of his parents' friends planned to
open a chain of athletic shoe discount stores. Although he has no experience or
training in business, Mark is "waiting" for an offer to manage one of these stores.
NOTE:
People with schizotypal personality disorder are Not typically sex addicts. In fact many with schizotypal personality disorder do not like being touched at all.
(I've see people with schizotypal personality disorder that have healthy sexual lives through treatment).
